A motorable bridge in the border village of Lahaleiñ, about 87 km from Khliehriat, collapsed today.
The bridge constructed over the Ïakang River snapped this morning and carried away by the strong currents, according to the local people.
Following the collapse several commuters remained stuck for hours. Later, some people managed to lay bamboos for people to cross over, risking their lives to make a perilous journey back home.
General Secretary of the Joint Action Committee of the border villages, Raja Suchen said that they have informed the Public Works Department at Hingaria with a request to help the villagers but to no avail.
It may be mentioned that on May 16, due to heavy rain, an RCC bridge number 54/1 at Shymplong was washed away, putting about 8000 villages in the area to untold hardship. The bridge connects six remote villages of Shymplong, Lejri, Huroi, Hingaria, Lahaleiñ and Borsora in the extreme corner of East Jaiñtia Hills district.
