Shillong, Aug 6: The body of Teseng M Sangma, Sub-Divisional Agriculture Officer (SDAO) from Ampati, was recovered on Wednesday afternoon, four days after he went missing in the Ganol River near Sella Wari.
Sangma was swept away by strong river currents on Sunday while on an outing with his family. Extensive search operations were launched immediately, involving teams from the Fire and Emergency Services, Tura Police and local expert divers.
Due to strong currents and poor visibility, the operations were limited to daylight hours. His body was eventually found downstream at Banseng Wari, near Wa Wari.
The Ganol River and other rivers in Garo Hills have been in spate following continuous heavy rainfall since Saturday, making search efforts even more challenging.
The South West Garo Hills district administration expressed deep sorrow over Sangma’s untimely passing. He was remembered as a kind, amiable and efficient officer by colleagues and locals alike.
Sangma is survived by his wife, Elphina B Sangma, who is the Assistant Director in the Agriculture Department, Tura, and their two young sons.
