Nongpoh, Aug 14: Three days after a young man jumped into the Umtrew River at Byrnihat, his body was discovered by a sand miner in Assam, downstream from where he went into the water
The body of the deceased, Wanphrangsngi Syiemlieh, from Nongkyndang Saiden village in Ri-Bhoi, was found at Morodola village.
Syiemlieh reportedly jumped into the river at Byrnihat on the morning of August 12 at around 9am. Search efforts were immediately launched by the State Response Team (SRT), the Fire and Emergency Service and police but, despite their attempts, no trace of him was found until today, when his body was recovered in Assam, having been swept away by the river’s current.
According to family members, the incident stemmed from a quarrel with his companions over the division of money obtained from a stolen mobile phone. It was alleged that over a mere Rs 300 that was not given to him, his friends chased and assaulted him. In fear, he leapt into the river, where he drowned.
Upon receiving information about the discovery, the Byrnihat Police promptly arrived at the scene to retrieve the body, which was floating on the river’s surface. Using a boat, they recovered the remains and transported them to Nongpoh Civil Hospital for the necessary legal procedures before handing the body over to the family.
