Bodies of the five people who were mowed down by a speeding truck on the Shillong bypass at Thangshalai have been laid today.
The four included Balarihun Kharkongor (27), Gracefully Nongbri (23), Banteibha Bina (20) Shantilang Nongbri (28)- all roadside vendors – and a male Korbarsing Kharduit (52) were buried at the graveyard in Thangshalai village.
It may be noted that an Assam-bound truck (UP51-AT-2949) knocked down four women vegetable vendors near Umkhen bridge, killing them on the spot, and then hit pedestrian Korbarsing Kharduit who succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.
The truck loaded with bamboo pieces crushed the four women who were selling fruits and vegetables sitting along side the road near Thangshalai village.
The driver ran away after the mishap and the police are looking for him.
