A bleak, yet stunning, photograph of slash-and-burn practices in Garo Hills has won the professional category of the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency’s World Photography Day Competition.
The contest was held last month, with winners announced this week.
Timour Claquin Chambugong’s photo of women walking through a burnt-out landscape won the prize, with Jason Marbaniang second and Mark Davis Nadon third. There were also seven consolation prizes.
The aim of the competition was to raise awareness on the growing natural resource degradation in the state and the urgent need for action to conserve these valuable resources and ensure a sustainable future for current and future generations.
There was also a category for mobile phone photography. The winner of this was Panborlang Toi’s photo of a stone quarry. Second place went to Binny Sangma and third to Crystar Ch Marak. There were also seven consolation prizes in this category as well.
