Workers of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL) will wear black badges on Monday and Tuesday before launching a sit-in demonstration from September 5.
The MeECL Progressive Workers Union (MPWU) decided, at its general meeting on August 20, to launch the agitation to push for its demand that casual workers in the state-owned power utility be regularised and have their arrears cleared.
Contractual workers make up around 40 percent of the MeECL workforce. In June, the Power Minister Prestone Tynsong said that the department would consider the issue of regularisation.
The sit-in will run from September 5 to 16, excluding Saturdays and Sundays, from 11am to 3pm daily.
The MPWU has sought support from other MeECL unions on Monday afternoon when the leader of the Coordination Committee of Registered MeECL (Employees) Association and Unions (CCORMAU) will address a gathering.
