The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will restore the “old glory” of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) if elected to power, the saffron outfit’s state Vice-President Bernard Marak said today.
Through a press release, Marak said that the council has given away at least 80 per cent of its revenue as most departments have been taken over by the state government without constitutional sanction.
“We want to reform the anomalies in the council. We are the only hope to restore the GHADC to its old glory against all odds and crises as the Congress and NPP (National People’s Party) cannot reform the GHADC. These two parties have ruined the GHADC and it is in such a deplorable position that it needs to beg from the state,” said Marak. “They exploited the people of Garo Hills with false promises and left the GHADC weaker every time they formed the executive committee.”
The BJP has been at the forefront of criticising GHADC leaders for alleged corruption and Marak continued this today.
“GHADC employees’ salaries are due for 34 months and shamelessly leaders claimed they cleared them while they continue to exploit the GHADC. These corrupt leaders are buying properties in Shillong and different places with council money while the employees are on strike. This does not seem to bother them. We are the only party which can bring back the old glory of GHADC as most of the BJP’s aspiring candidates are young and aim to end corruption in GHADC,” he stated.
