The unflinching support of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) top brass for Bernard Marak, who was arrested last week over allegations that his property Rimpu Bagan in Tura was being used as a brothel, could mean that the saffron party has some clue that the investigation into the matter is unfair.
This was stated by opposition Chief Whip George Lyngdoh today when asked about the party’s views on the case.
Yesterday, state BJP president Ernest Mawrie petitioned Governor Satya Pal Malik for an independent probe into the allegations against Marak. The party has also called for the removal of the West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivekanand Singh Rathore, and Deputy Commissioner, Swapnil Tembe, in the interests of a free and fair investigation.
“It is apt for the Governor to decide accordingly and also to ensure that justice prevails and the law of the land is above everyone and it should be upheld,” Lyngdoh said. “The very fact that the BJP has raised this kind of objection with the Governor perhaps indicates that they have a clue that this investigation is not as per the law of the land. Therefore there is apprehension in the party and they approached the Governor.”
The BJP leaders told the Governor that party workers in Tura were being harassed following the raid against Marak’s property, which was a “clear case of political vendetta”.
