Shillong, Sep 5:The Meghalaya unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has expressed its gratitude to the Centre for its reform of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
Wankitbok Pohshna, general secretary of the state BJP unit, called the reforms a landmark. The central government agreed with the states to simply the GST regime, with slabs reduced from four to two. Rates on numerous items, especially those bought by the general public, have been reduced.
This is expected to boost domestic consumption to offset the economic hit that tariffs imposed by the United States will have. However, cutting taxes might also worsen India’s budget deficit.
On allegations made by the opposition that the reforms were made with an eye on the upcoming state elections in Bihar, Assam and West Bengal, he said that it is their job to make such accusations.
