The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Meghalaya unit celebrated the party’s 44th foundation day today across the state.
The BJP was founded on April 6, 1980 after leaders of the former Jana Sangh launched a new party.
Today’s event was marked in all the BJP mandals in Khasi, Jaintia and Garo Hills, with the party flag hoisted there as well as the state party office in Shillong.
Present at the function at state party headquarters were BJP Meghalaya president Ernest Mawrie, state office bearers, executive members, morcha heads, district presidents, mandal presidents and party workers.
Floral tributes were paid to Jana Sangh stalwarts, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee and Deen Dayal Upadhyay.
The attendees then listened to the live stream of speeches by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP national president JP Nadda.
To commemorate this occasion, the BJP has launched the ‘Sewa Hi Saptah’, a week-long programme that will run until April 14, the birth anniversary of BR Ambedkar.
