In a major development within the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), the lone elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MDC and current executive member, Bhupendra Hajong, has resigned as an executive member of the executive committee.
The development was confirmed by party spokesperson Bernard N Marak with the reason for the resignation given as “following orders in line with the party high command”. The resignation was submitted to GHADC Chairman Denang T Sangma today.
The BJP has over the past few months continually reviewed its relationship with the National People’s Party-led coalition government in the GHADC over allegations of corruption.
“He was supposed to pull out of the coalition quite some time ago but did not do so as he had a few pending bills. He had requested time from the party high command to complete the process and was assured these would be cleared. However, he was continually given the run-around even while the other MDCs were withdrawing money under bogus schemes,” said Marak.
