Bike taxi drivers today denied accusations spread on social media that they overcharge their customers.
Nehemaiah Mylliemngap, speaking on behalf of the newly-formed Meghalaya Two Wheelers Taxi Association, said that the comments online have drawn concern from the riders.
“We do not charge extra fares from passengers,” he said, adding that extras do come to them as tips but, otherwise, they stick to the rates according to their ride hailing apps.
He also urged passengers to come forward if they face any overcharging by bike taxis.
Meanwhile, the Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO), asked the District Transport Officer (DTO) what action is being taken against black and yellow cabs that overcharge passengers.
The DTO has raised the concern of overcharging in last week’s notification that banned two-wheel taxis from operating in East Khasi Hills.
The pressure group also wanted to know how many licences were applied for when the DTO opened applications for permits in 2020. The lack of licences was the chief concern in the DTO’s banning order.
The official informed HITO and a delegation of bike taxi riders that three companies had applied for licences since then, such as Uber and Rapido.
