The Border Guards of Bangladesh (BGB) today reportedly halted construction work of a side drain for a football ground in Muktapur prompting members of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) to burn down a temporary fence erected by villagers from across the international border.
According to villagers, Bangladeshis had erected a fence and encroached into their land by cultivating rice.
KSU, War Jaiñtia circle general secretary Lurman Talang stated the construction work carried out by the villagers was under the MNREGS. He said the issue was taken up with the office of the Amlarem Sub Divisional Officer but to no avail.
He also stated that the BSF responsible to guard the borders and ensure safety of the populace there had advised villagers to work during the night.
“Therefore we have taken upon ourselves the task of taking down the temporary fence,” he said, adding, “The BSF who are sentinels of the border are doing nothing in this regard, but made a ridiculous advice.”
The KSU further demanded the State government to take up the issue within a week.
