Arrested State BJP vice president Bernard Marak was today remanded to judicial custody but hours later he was arrested again by Tura police in connection with other charges against him including explosives found at his farmhouse recently.
The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, West Garo Hills has ordered Marak to be in judicial custody for 14 days in connection with a case registered against him in Tura Women Police Station under Section 370(3) IPC and Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956.
The judicial custody has come as a relief for Marak who had spent 14 days in Tura police lock up since he was arrested on July 28.
However, the relief was short lived as he was arrested again in another case registered against him by Tura police under Sections 109, 110, 120, 120B, 121 and 121A of IPC and also Sections 4 and 5 of Explosive Substances Act, 1908.
Police said that Marak was arrested tonight from Tura jail. He will be produced in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate tomorrow.
It may be mentioned that the explosives were found in one of the rooms at Bernard’s farmhouse six days after the police raid at the farmhouse on July 22.
According to police, during the search at the premises on July 28, they found one small door-like structure and when they broke open the door, they found 35 Gelatin sticks, 100 detonators, four cross bows and 15 arrows.
Following the recovery, police charged Marak under the Explosives Substances Act, 1908.
Marak is the member of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) from Tura constituency. He is considered as the main political rival of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.
However, Sangma recently denied that the arrest of Marak and the various charges against him were politically linked.
