BJP MLA from West Bengal, Agnimitra Paul, has warned Meghalayans not to trust the Trinamool Congress at the next state elections.
Paul, the state BJP general secretary and ex-president of the party’s women’s wing in West Bengal, visited Meghalaya and held detailed discussions on issues faced by women with BJP female members at the state party office.
Later, she expressed anger at how political parties in Meghalaya have skirted around the issue of women empowerment and have used the matrilineal society of the state as a cover for their malintents. She highlighted issues that women of Meghalaya face, including domestic violence, rising malnutrition among girls, etc. She also expressed grave concern over rising cases of teenage pregnancy and poor reproductive health of women in the state.
She said the disempowerment of women in the state seemed deliberate and government inaction seemed planned. Paul stated that there was an urgent need for a BJP-led government in the state in order to bring about women empowerment in Meghalaya and in order to ensure that at least basic facilities are made available to them, especially in rural areas.
She also shared her first-hand experience with the TMC in West Bengal and requested the people of Meghalaya to be aware of the “nefarious designs” of this party.
