The bad blood between Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) Chief Executive Member Benedic Marak and the rest of the National People’s Party appears to be coming to a head, with a no-confidence motion set to be tabled against him.
Marak, who is also the Raksamgre MLA, is apparently facing calls to quit or be removed by his fellow NPP MDCs. He has reportedly been trying to drum up support among the Trinamool Congress to keep his administration in the GHADC going.
Today, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, who is also the NPP leader, said that the cabinet has discussed the current situation in the GHADC and referred the matter to the Governor, who will call a special session of the council where a no-confidence motion against Marak will be taken up and where the CEM will have to prove he has confidence of the majority of GHADC members.
Marak had received criticism from Sangma in the past for using tied funds from the central government to pay pending salaries of GHADC staff, a move that could threaten future funding from the Centre.
