For the first time, the office of the Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills took the initiative to organise an essay competition for upper primary to higher secondary students centred on the Behdienkhlam Festival.
The competition was held yesterday at Kiang Nangbah Government Higher Secondary School, Mynthong, here. The winners were felicitated today.
Present were Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla, Deputy Commissioner Abhinav Kumar Singh, Assistant Commissioner F Passah, Jowai Dalloi Puramon Kynjing, President of Seinraij Jowai H Toi and others.
Shylla stressed the importance of documenting local traditions and urged that such initiatives continue. He was pleased with students’ participation, calling it a positive sign of growing interest among the youth.
The winner was Riwanka Pde of Government Boys Higher Secondary School, who received a cash prize of Rs 10,000. R Passah of Kiang Nangbah Government Higher Secondary School was second and was awarded Rs 7,000 and Echwadaka Lamurong of St Mary Mazzarello Girls Higher Secondary received Rs 5,000 in third place.
