The Block Development Officers (BDOs) have been authorised to take up matters related to registrations of births and deaths under the provisions of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969.
Addressing a press conference today, Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal said that under the provision of the Act (Central Act No.18 of 1960) and the Meghalaya Registration of Births and Deaths rules, 1999 the BDOs are empowered to take up, hear, pass necessary order and dispose matters of cases relating to registrations of births and deaths.
He said with this, people will no longer have to travel to Nongpoh. Handling these cases at the block level will make it significantly easier for the public to obtain birth and death certificates.
In the past individuals had to travel long distances to Nongpoh just to obtain the necessary order for applying for these certificates but with this decision, they can save time and reduce travel expenses, he added.
