Shillong, Feb 26: The High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India, M Riaz Hamidullah, today paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of the Meghalaya Assembly, Thomas A Sangma.
The meeting comes as India and Bangladesh seek a rapprochement after bilateral ties soured following the Bangladesh Revolution of 2024, which led to the overthrow of India ally Sheikh Hasina. Meghalaya shares a 400km-plus border with Bangladesh and trade, tourism and cultural ties will need to be reset.
The High Commissioner was accompanied by Zikrul Hasan Fahad, Assistant High Commissioner and Head of Mission, Guwahati.
During the meeting, the Speaker presented Hamidullah with a coffee table book and traditional gifts of Meghalaya as a gesture of goodwill and appreciation.
Also present on the occasion were Deputy Speaker Limison D Sangma and senior officials of the Assembly.
“The interaction was held in a cordial and constructive atmosphere, underscoring the spirit of mutual respect and continued engagement between Bangladesh and the state of Meghalaya,” a press release from the Assembly Secretariat said today.
