Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar today laid the foundation stone for the re-development of Iawmusiang, one of the largest and oldest traditional markets in Jaintia Hills estimated at Rs 25.60 crore.
Dhar announced that the project would be completed within 24 years by the contractor, Pyrkhat Hinge.
The proposal for re-development of the market in Jowai was accorded administrative approval in July 2006 and an amount of Rs 20.09 crore was sanctioned by the DoNER Ministry, of which the first instalment — amounting to Rs 6.33 crore — was released on February 10, 2009.
The project was cleared under Non Lapsable Central Pool of Resources Scheme and it later encountered a temporary setback due to changes made in the drawings and in the DPR.
The Iawmusiang market existed since the days of the ancient Jaintia kingdom.
Dhar also announced future projects for Jowai in construction of a mini secretariat, shopping mall, stadium and other infrastructure to promote tourism.
The deputy chief minister also laid the foundation for the construction of a 38.163 km road from Ialong-Jowai-Madur Thymme-Niriang-Mukhla estimated at Rs 50 crore and for the annexue building of the Circuit House, Jowai.
Jowai MLA, Wailadmiki Shylla, who is also the chairman of MUDA, JHADC CEM Thombor Shiwat, district officials and others were present on the occasion.
