The Jaiñtia Students Union and Jaiñtia Youth Federation forced banks and other private institutions that were open today to close on account of Thomas Jones Day.
The two pressure groups shut down branches of the Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank, Apex Bank, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, Meghalaya Rural Bank, Bank of India, North East Small Finance Bank, etc.
The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) also directed the closure of all the state government offices, educational institutions, government offices, including banks that remained opened in East Jaiñtia Hills.
The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) RIST-USTM unit also forced shut the University of Science And Technology for not granting holiday in honour of the founding Father of the Khasi Alphabet and pioneer of the Welsh Presbyterian Mission in Meghalaya’s Khasi Hills.
Thomas Jones Day was only made a holiday from 2018. It marks the arrival of the Welsh missionary, who gave the Khasi language its present written form, to the Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills in the 19th century.
