Shillong, Aug 12: One of the Bangladeshis suspected to have attacked an indigenous tribal in Rongdongai village in South West Khasi Hills has died, police informed today.
Information regarding how this person, identified only as Akram, came into the police’s hands has been somewhat conflicting. It was reported on Monday that he had sustained serious injuries from locals and had been taken to Maheshkhola Primary Health Centre for treatment.
Akram, from Sherpur in Bangladesh, was one of eight Bangladeshi nationals accused of assaulting and robbing Balsrang A Marak (22) in the early hours of Friday. Four were arrested on Saturday and one other on Sunday. Two are still on the run.
However, today the SWKH Superintendent of Police issued clearer and more detailed information regarding Akram’s fate.
The SP said that the police of Nonghyllam Police Station had received information at around 4:30pm on Monday that villagers from Kaithakona had “found” Akram in their village. He was then handed over by the villagers to the Border Security Force (BSF).
The BSF and police took him to Maheshkhola PHC for treatment but there was no medical officer on duty there, so they moved the injured suspect to Khonjoy PHC where he was declared dead on arrival.
Akram’s body was today brought to Mawkyrwat Civil Hospital for an inquest and autopsy. A case of murder has been registered by police. At least two other suspects belonging to the same gang were assaulted by villagers and are receiving treatment in hospital.
