More students from Meghalaya pursuing medical studies in Bangladesh have arrived home today.
Six students of Meghalaya were among the 27 Indians who crossed over from Bangladesh through Dawki land port today.
Along with them, 11 students from Nepal also arrived at the Dawki land port from violence hit Bangladesh.
Seven other students from Meghalaya arrived at Kolkata airport today at 8 am from Bangladesh by Biman Bangladesh flight. They reached Shillong today evening after flying to Guwahati airport by IndiGo Airline.
Meanwhile, around 40 Meghalaya students who crossed over from Bangladesh to Tripura yesterday were received by officials at Khliehriat circuit house in East Jaintia Hills today at around 7 pm.
The Meghalaya government has activated a helpline number for its citizens in Bangladesh for seeking assistance, if necessary, due to the unrest in the neighbouring country.
Indian citizens of the State can call the helpline number 1800-345-3644 of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations for any assistance they may need.
In view of the ongoing situation in Bangladesh, and to assist the citizens of the State, the Meghalaya government of Meghalaya has deputed Hiwot Rymbai, Additional Superintendent of Police (+91 96157 16153) as a Nodal Officer at the border along with Executive Officer, Dawki Land Port Authority (+91 84150 60802 ) as Assistant Nodal Officer.
The protests in Bangladesh started on July 1 against the decision by the government to reinstate a 30 per cent government job quota for descendants of those who fought in the country’s 1971 war of independence.
Nearly 8,000 Indian students are studying in medical colleges in Dhaka, Comilla and Brahmanbaria.
They did not face any violence but most fled fearing attack on their campuses.
Since July 19, nearly 1,000 students from India, Nepal and Bhutan fled Bangladesh and crossed the border with Meghalaya and Tripura for safety.
