Rambrai-Jyrngam MDC, Bajop Pyngrope today said that the State government should review the border deal signed between Meghalaya and Assam, if there are too many problems.
“I also feel that in areas where there is a 90 per cent problem it should be reviewed,” Pyngrope told Highland Post.
However, he was confident that Langpih along the inter-state border in West Khasi Hills, that will be taken up in the second phase of border talks, will not face much of a problem.
The MDC, who recently joined the NPP, said, “I’m happy to work with such a humble Chief Minister who listens to our queries and grievances. He has assured me that there will be no hardships and our people will not be affected.”
Pyngrope also expressed confidence that all the Khasi villages under Langpih will included in Meghalaya. “We have to work out for some Garo villages, but it will come to us ultimately because they want to be with us,” he added.
The two states have signed an agreement to settle the dispute in six less complicated areas but the second phase is likely to be more challenging as it will involve talks on Block 1, Block 2 and Langpih.
Opposition to the deal is increasing daily as residents and civil society groups move to oppose handover of land to Assam that they believe rightly belongs to Meghalaya. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also ruled out revisiting the deal signed with Meghalaya.
Meanwhile, the Survey of India is yet to demarcate the border, which has to be ratified by Parliament.
