Despite some temptation to jump ship, Rambrai-Jyrngam MDC Bajop Pyngrope has thrown in his lot with the Congress and would contest the Assembly elections in 2023 from Eastern West Khasi Hills.
Speaking to Highland Post, Pyngrope, who was recently appointed as the secretary of the Congress in-charge of West Khasi Hills, said that he is sure to contest from Mawthadraishan if he gets the party ticket.
“We have already directed all party workers to meet in February to further strengthen the party organization in the region for the 2023 election,” he said.
Pyngrope already represents a West Khasi Hills constituency in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council. Rambrai-Jyrngam is also represented by the Congress in the Assembly at present, meaning that he needs to find a different seat for 2023.
“I will contest the election from the Congress if I get the ticket because I believe that Congress will rise from the ashes like a Phoenix and all the Congress MDCs will also win in the Assembly election,” he said.
West Khasi Hills lacks health and education infrastructure, he said, pointing to the fact that Nongstoiñ Civil Hospital caters to 1,000 villages and part of the new Eastern West Khasi Hills district lacks numerous facilities and manpower. He said that there are also very few government-aided schools in the region.
He also said that the scenic beauty of West Khasi Hills remains untapped but has huge tourism potential with roads, through central schemes, having started to improve.
