The World Day Against Child Labour was observed at Thadlaskein, West Jaintia Hills district yesterday by the office of the District Legal Service Authority in collaboration with the office of the Deputy Labour Commissioner and the BDO office.
An awareness programme was organised on the occasion wherein Secretary District Legal Services Authority B. Majaw discussed the scheme available for underprivileged children deprived of education due to financial constraints.
Emphasising the importance of protecting children’s rights, she urged parents to ensure that their children attend school and to visit the legal service authority at Khliehtyrshi for more information about the schemes available.
Legal Aid counsel R. Lyngdoh sensitized the public on Child Labour (Prohibition & Regulation) Act 1986 prohibiting the employment of children under the age of 14 in certain occupation and processes.
Labour Inspector B. Toi said the labour office plays a crucial role in overseeing and conducting inspections to prevent employment of children under 14 prioritising the safety and right of children.
