In a surprise enforcement drive, the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB), Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) and district administration seized a significant quantity of prohibited plastic products from Laban Last Stop and Polo Market today.
The raid was conducted in response to a High Court directive to strictly enforce the plastic waste management rules that prohibit the continued sale of single-use plastic cups and plastic bags under 120 microns.
Senior Environmental Engineer Wanshan R Kharkrang stated that despite repeated public notices, plastic items below 120 microns and those lacking proper manufacturer details and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) certification continue to be sold.
During the raid, officials raised awareness among shopkeepers about legal requirements and advised them to verify plastic products’ compliance with CPCB guidelines using QR codes.
