Attendees at a candlelight vigil in memory of Walinda Binong, the student who authorities say killed herself at her university in Rajasthan last week, have demanded justice for the deceased.
The vigil, organised this evening by the Dorbar Shnong of Nongagang, also sought to convey messages of condolence to the bereaved family. Other groups that took part were the Nongpoh Area Women Welfare Association, press fraternity and pressure groups and youth organisations.
Binong was a fashion design student at the School of Design at Mody University. She was reported dead at her college hostel in Sikar town, Rajasthan. The college authorities claimed that she had poisoned and later hanged herself but friends and family of the victim suspect that Binong could have been the victim of jealousy of her peers or have had problems with her boyfriend and that these could have been contributory factors. The family have also questioned how Binong could have hanged herself after consuming poison.
Those who spoke on the occasion of the vigil demand that the Meghalaya and Rajasthan governments take drastic action by holding an inquiry to find out the whole truth of the tragedy.
