Police on Saturday arrested a man from Assam with a consignment of heroin as he entered Meghalaya in a tourist vehicle.
At around 11am yesterday, police in Lumshnong, East Jaintia Hills, were carrying out random vehicle checks. One vehicle that was stopped and searched was a tourist Sumo (ML 05 J 8725).
Police found 10 soap cases in a backpack containing suspected heroin. The bag belonged to Sanju Haque Lasker (29), a resident of Sonai, near Silchar. Following a chemical test, the substance was confirmed to be heroin, which weighed approximately 125.19 grammes. Rs 4,550 in cash and various ID cards were also seized by the police from Lasker.
A case has been registered against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and further investigations are ongoing.
