The extreme felling of trees that is causing massive deforestation in parts of West Khasi Hills has become a concern and the public are questioning the apparent lack of intervention by the Assembly committee on the environment.
This problem has deepened because rampant trees are also felled to produce charcoal that is supplied to factories that manufacture wires.
PS Lyngdoh Marshilong has questioned the lack of intervention by the environment committee on the matter. He stated that the committee members had conducted an inspection of the factory manufacturing wires at Rwiang village in the past few months.
“The supply of charcoal at the factory producing wire at Rwiang continues to date and if this persists for another year the forests at Mawlangdep to Langja, Mawruksoiñ to Nongmisei up to Shallang will all vanish.
“It seems that the committee members are not watchful that deforestation will adversely affect the environment and the major cause of climate changes that will ultimately also affect agriculture activities and the major cause of soil erosion,” he said.
