East Shillong MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh backed the state government inasmuch as she will not pass judgement on the collapse of the dome of the under-construction new Assembly building until the third party audit report comes in.
The suspended Congress MLA, who supports the government, preferred not to speculate when asked by Highland Post whether rampant corruption led to the dome collapse.
Lyngdoh said that the audit will give a clear indicator of what exactly transpired and once the finding is made then there will be liberty to discuss the corruption charge.
“This is the reason we have adopted practices where we have allowed the scrutiny of the functioning of government,” she said. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had, after the disaster, harped on how technical" the construction of the dome is and Lyngdoh echoed this, saying that the public should understand that the dome required the transportation of 3,500 tonnes of steel.
Terming the incident as unfortunate, the legislator said that, had construction gone off without a hitch, it would have been an elegant and big achievement. Lyngdoh also urged the public not to give into cynical speculation but remain positive and ensure that Meghalaya gets one of the best Assembly buildings in the country.
