The state Assembly condoled the deaths of former legislators HS Shylla and Simon Siangshai as well as that of former President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, on the first day of the autumn session here today.
Shylla had represented Nongkrem while Siangshai did the same for the erstwhile Rymbai constituency.
The legislators who spoke during the obituary reference referred to Shylla as a powerful orator and remembered Siangshai as the one who brought the first cement plant to East Jaiñtia Hills.
Initiating the obituary references, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that he had been a party colleague to both of these departed leaders. Shylla had been a member of the National People’s Party and Siangshai was part of the Nationalist Congress Party.
Meanwhile, Sangma said that Mukherjee had contributed to Indian politics and administration more than one can imagine.
Remembering Mukherjee’s association with his own father, the late Purno A Sangma, the Chief Minister said that the former president had a “sharp memory”.
Leader of Opposition, Dr. Mukul Sangma said that when he made his debut in 1993, as an MLA, he was privileged to listen to the oratory skills of Shylla.
