Seven more members of the bikers’ gang that was involved in the assaults that occurred at Mawlai Iewrynghep and Jaiaw on June 24 have been arrested taking the tally to eleven so far.
Informing this today, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger said that six members of the same gang involved in the June 24 attacks were nabbed after another assault that occurred yesterday at Jaiaw Umpohliew.
He said that yesterday four labourers from Assam had gone to do some tile construction work in a house at Jaiaw.
At about 6:10 pm while returning back in a taxi driven by a local person, the labourers were stopped by six youths on a bridge at Jaiaw Umpohliew. The labourers including the taxi driver were physically assaulted by the youth in which four of the labourers received grievous injuries after being hit by an iron hammer.
According to Nongtnger, the VDP members intervened and after a chase managed to nab one of the culprits on the way to Madan Heh area of Mawlai Phudmuri.
On receiving information from the locality, police rushed to the spot and first took the injured labourers immediately to Shillong Civil Hospital for treatment, where one of them was admitted.
Later, with the help of the locality members, police caught five others. Out of the six, three are juveniles.
In this regard, a case has been registered at Lumdiengjri police station under Sections 341, 326, 34 of IPC.
“It is also ascertained that they are part of the bikers’ gang involved in the assault on June 24,” Nongtnger said.
He also informed that yesterday night, another miscreant involved in the assaults at Mawlai on June 24 was arrested taking the number of accused arrested to eleven.
“The district police are on the job to arrest all those involved,” Nongtnger said.
Two days back, four members of the same bikers’ gang were arrested by police.
Meanwhile, Director General of Police, Lajja Ram Bishnoi today informed that five Scooties and eleven mobile phones have been seized by police from the arrested youths.
“We have taken them into five days of police remand and interrogation is on by police,” Bishnoi said.
It may be mentioned that on June 24, a group of several bikers assaulted a traffic policeman on being stopped at SD Khongwir junction, Mawlai Iewrynghep for not wearing helmets.
On their way back they assaulted a Swiggy delivery boy near Mahari Petrol Pump, Jaiaw and later headed towards Jaiaw Pdeng.
They then stopped at ES Restaurant at Jaiaw Pdeng and assaulted two interns from Kerala identified as Rejaz M. Sydeek and Sarath S. Thambi.
Criminal cases have been registered at Lumdiengjri Police Station in connection with the assault on the Swiggy delivery boy and the two interns from Kerala.
Another criminal case was registered at Mawlai Police Station in connection with the assault on the traffic policeman.
