An all-party meeting will be convened by the government of Assam on Tuesday to discuss the border dispute with Meghalaya, media in the neighbouring state have reported.
Negotiations between the two sides are at an advanced stage concerning six areas of difference. Meghalaya is hopeful that a resolution to the longstanding problem can be presented to the people of the state as a birthday gift as Meghalaya celebrates 50 years of statehood on January 21.
The all-party meeting will discuss the three reports submitted by Assam’s regional committees. Meghalaya had also constituted three regional committees to prepare its case during the negotiations.
The Chief Ministers of Assam and Meghalaya, Himanta Biswa Sarma and Conrad Sangma respectively, met in Guwahati last week, following which both sides spoke positively on the chances of an agreement.
The two CMs will meet again this week after which a joint report will be prepared. Sarma and Sangma will then meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah before a final agreement will be announced.
