Assam police today was forced to shift its camp from Umlaper village situated along the inter-state border under Ri Bhoi district after villagers came out in huge numbers to protest against the assault of three youth.
According to reports, two youth received grievous injuries and one escaped unhurt after they were allegedly assaulted by Assam Police personnel yesterday while they were on their way home from Mawlasnai.
Following the incident, angry residents took to the streets to register their protest and demanded immediate removal of the camp, which according to them was set up before Independence Day.
Fearing breakdown of law and order, Mawhati MLA, Charles Marngar, Ri Bhoi border magistrate Raja Brahma and Superintendent of Police Nazarious Lamare rushed to the village to take stock of the situation.
The matter was settled after the matter was discussed with the West Karbi Anglong district authorities as Assam police agreed to shift their camp for peace to return.
