The recent attack on three non-tribals in the city and sit-in demonstration to protest it has caught the attention of North Karimganj MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, who has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to take action over the issue.
On January 20, at least three persons sustained injuries after masked miscreants attacked them with sharp weapons near Lumdiengjri police station.
Yesterday, a husband-wife duo held a sit-in demonstration to protest this and other supposed atrocities against non-tribals in Shillong over the decades, which, they said, have gone unpunished.
In a letter dated today, Purkayastha, who has previously pleaded with Meghalaya not to introduce the Inner Line Permit, told Shah that linguistic minorities in the state, especially Bengalis, have had to face hate threats (sic) and atrocities
As examples, the Congress MLA named an attack on Ramakrishna Mission and "attack on Bengali boys playing basketball. He requested Shah to immediately intervene and take action on the matter.
Meanwhile, state executive member of BJP Meghalaya, Pawan Sharma will meet BJP minister Sanbor Shullai to take up the issue of attack on non-tribals with the chief minister Conrad Sangma and home minister Lahkmen Rymbui.
The senior BJP leader said that a delegation of BJP leaders will also take up with Shullai safety issues in the context of the demolition of Kali idol recently.
