The Assam government has deployed Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel to Umlaper, which lies in the disputed Block II region between Meghalaya and Assam.
Concerned that the move could be another attempt at encroachment, the Ri-Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF) sought for more information as to the reason and were reassured that the deployment was solely due to Independence Day being less than a week away. The Karbi Anglong council elections are also close at hand.
Umlaper villagers, however, still want Meghalaya to deploy police of its own to maintain peace and tranquillity.
