Police from Assam are carrying out inspections of heavy vehicles daily on Meghalaya territory and the process results in huge traffic snarls that envelope ordinary people trying to get to the neighbouring state.
This was seen firsthand by reporters who travelled to the Meghalaya half of Jorabat yesterday evening.
Trucks seeking entry into Assam are permitted to do so only from 9pm onwards on National Highway 6. Police from that state then conduct checks on these vehicles, which ends up disrupting the travel schedule of private vehicles, tourist taxis and the like, which is a great hindrance to people travelling to hospital, railway station, etc.
Cars are forced to cross over and take the wrong way to get past the snarl.
Meghalaya lays claim to the area where the Assam police conduct their inspections. Personnel and officers from the Byrnihat police outpost have previously visited the site and got into an argument with their Assam counterparts over the issue.
