In an incident that could further inflame tensions along the dispute Meghalaya-Assam border, an Assam policeman allegedly manhandled a 17-year-old girl in Mawsikar, West Khasi Hills, yesterday as the girl and two young women were on their way to church.
According to Meghalaya police, the minor, along with two other women, aged 18 and 20 were on their way to church in the village which is close to Langpih when they met with Assam police personnel.
One of the Assam policemen took hold of the 17-year-old by “both hands” following which the girl resisted and fled into a nearby shop with the other two.
Some time later the trio left the shop but were chased after by the police and they then ran back home and reported the matter to their relatives.
The Sub Divisional Officer of Mawshynrut Sub Division and the Deputy Superintendent of Police from Nongstoin were deputed to Mawsikar for a spot inquiry and to take stock of the law and order situation.
“Legal action in the matter is being taken according to the law and a detailed report in the matter will follow after receiving a report,” a press release informed today.
