The Achik State Peoples’ Front (ASPF) Garobadha regional unit has urged the South West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police to prohibit gambling including betting, lotteries, or any form of games involving money or valuables during the upcoming Chenga Benga Mela.
In a memorandum, the ASPF said it is against such activities as they may lead to unlawful behaviour and disrupt the peaceful nature of the festival.
The organisation reminded the gang-rape incident during the mela and called for strict security measures. “The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) also raised concerns about the possible involvement of Rohingya infiltrators, making it even more crucial to ensure tight security and monitoring,” ASPF president Sanjhu T. Sangma said
Further, it suggested installation of CCTV cameras and continuous patrolling to prevent any criminal activities, verification of participants and vendors and special protection for women and children.
