After a gap of several years, the city yesterday witnessed a daring robbery at two petrol pumps by two men armed with an AK-47 rifle.
The armed men donning helmets first looted Rs 2,80,000 from Assam Oil petrol pump, near Pantaloon showroom at Fire Brigade at around 9 pm.
Later, they tried to loot an Indian Oil petrol pump at Nongrim Hills.
According to the manager of Assam Oil petrol pump, the two men who came in a bike entered the cash counter.
While one of them brandished a gun, the other demanded all the money from the cash counter. The manager said that the men spoke in Hindi.
After taking the money amounting to Rs 2,80,000, the robbers left the petrol pump and sped away in their bike.
Later, the same armed men arrived at the Indian Oil petrol pump at Nongrim Hills.
According to the manager of the petrol pump, the men could not get any money as there was no cash in the counter.
Police later arrived at the two petrol pumps to conduct investigation into the incident. They also examined the footage of the CCTV camera at the petrol pumps.
The incident reminded of a recent robbery of a petrol pump in Ri-Bhoi district when two armed unidentified men looted over Rs 2 lakh from a Highway Carrier Refilling Centre at 14th Mile area on January 7.
They also snatched money from another staff member at the petrol pump.
The two miscreants came on a red and black 220 cc Pulsar bike and carried an AK-47 assault rifle and a 9mm pistol. After the robbery, they fled towards Sonapur.
An FIR has been filed with the Byrnihat Police Outpost with regards to the incident.
