The Meghalaya chapter of the Awaken India Movement, which has routinely been opposed to any move to make vaccines mandatory, or mask-wearing and lockdowns, for that matter, has described the state government’s order that all civil servants get a Covid jab by December 23 as illegal.
In support of this, AIM Meghalaya stated that the central government had assured the Supreme Court that vaccination is purely voluntary. It also highlighted a Meghalaya High Court order, though the government had referred to the same order in passing its December 23 deadline.
According to the AIM’s interpretation, the High Court had directed the government not to provide disincentives to those who choose not to get the jab. However, the government order suggests that the court was instructing it to do just that.
