The putative organisers of a planned protest, who called for a public demonstration against the Covid-19 lockdown and vaccination drive, were summoned by police today and warned to take “corrective steps” failing which they will be prosecuted.
In a release, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Sylvester Nongtnger, said that the “mindless request” had been posted on a social media group called Keinnoh Ynnai Long Mraw today wherein the organisers had exhorted the public to come out in large numbers of June 1 to march through the city in protest against the lockdown and vaccination measures.
The police quickly identified the administrators and members of the group, some of whom were summoned by the authorities where they were warned of legal action.
“Due to high incidence of Covid-19 cases and rise in deaths, such an irresponsible step (i.e., holding the protest) would lead to violation of the lockdown, which is meant to control the pandemic and will only be a risk to the health and lives of many,” Nongtnger said.
