Police have arrested two men after they were found in a vehicle transporting a large amount of heroin.
Based on intelligence inputs regarding the transportation of contraband from Silchar, Assam, to Meghalaya, anti-narcotics officers and those of the anti-infiltration unit set up a checkpoint at Umtyra, East Jaintia Hills. Seeing that police were checking all vehicles passing through, two cars approaching the checkpoint tried to reverse but the police gave chase.
One of the cars (ML 05 N 9889), with occupants identified as Pynhoi Nongtdu (35) of Pohshnong, Nartiang, and Banteilang Mynsong (23) of Pdengshnong, Mawryngkneng, was found to be carrying heroin of “commercial quantity” weighing 326 grammes.
Another vehicle (AS 11 T 1645) was found abandoned but police recovered 13 cartons of cigarettes smuggled into the country. The authorities are trying to trace the occupants of this vehicle, a white Maruti Dezire.
Two separate police cases have been registered at Khliehriat police station, one for the heroin and one for the illegal cigarettes.
