Residents of South West Garo Hills today rallied in Ampati to seek relocation of the upcoming Maternity & Child Hospital (M&CH) from the border town of Mahendraganj.
The NGOs had earlier through various platforms expressed their unhappiness over the move of the state to allocate the hospital to the town as it falls in one corner of the district and would inconvenience residents in cases of medical emergencies. They had sought for the M&CH to be built closer to Ampati so that residents would find it easier.
The rally was led by the NGOs including the GSU, GSMC, AYWO, MU, AYC, AHAM, members of the Church, Nokmas, Sordars as well as residents of the district.
Earlier the NGOs had met the minister of health and child welfare to demand shifting of the hospital from Mahendraganj.
“We want to show our unhappiness at the state government for forcing the M&CH to be built in Mahendraganj where it will be extremely inconvenient for people to travel during emergency cases. As most cases will be of emergencies, it makes no sense to us to shift it so far when there is land where the hospital can be brought up near everyone,” said GSU president of Ampati Zone, Salman Sangma.
The rally moved through the entire town of Ampati with a meeting on the issue taking place where various leaders spoke on the situation. They also promised to continue their agitation to ensure their demand is met.
