Laitumkhrah-Malki MDC and husband of state Congress leader Ampareen Lyngdoh, Fantin Joseph Lakadong could well join the National People’s Party in the near future.
Speaking to Highland Post today, Lakadong said that all of his supporters in his constituency want him to quit the Congress, which has suffered through a string of high-profile and grassroots resignations and defections over the past few months.
“I am yet to take the decision but my supporters have had a meeting and 100 per cent of them want me to leave the Congress and join the NPP. I will be making up my mind in these few days,” he said, admitting that this could signal that the people of the constituency have lost faith in the Congress.
“Our supporters feel that the Congress cannot come back to power both in the Centre and the state, which is a great loss in many ways for a constituency and my supporters who worked very hard to elect me as their MDC,” he said.
The MDC claimed that he has already received feelers from the NPP but has yet to decide whether he wants to throw his hat into the ring for the 2023 Assembly elections, though there are one or two constituencies that he is eyeing.
When asked about the current status of the Meghalaya Congress, Lakadong said that even though the senior leadership has worked very hard to improve the condition of the party, it continues to struggle and it appears to him that many more members are planning to quit.
