Shillong, Feb 23: The Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has expressed disappointment over the delay in submission of the report by the committee constituted to examine the amendment to the Constitution (Schedule Tribes) Order 1950.
Even after the lapse of 14 months since it was formed, HYC President Roy Kupar Synrem said the continued delay in submission of the report reflects a lack of seriousness and urgency on the part of the State government in safeguarding the rights and interests of the indigenous tribal population of the State.
The HYC questioned the purpose of constituting such a committee if its report is being indefinitely delayed. “The indigenous people of Meghalaya deserve clarity, transparency, and accountability. Prolonged silence and bureaucratic procrastination only fuel suspicion that vested interests are at play,” he said.
Urging the state government to ensure that the committee’s report is submitted within a stipulated timeline, the HYC emphasised that the report must be made public for consultation before it makes any decisions based on the findings.
