The new Rongjeng Model Degree College in East Garo Hills is of substandard construction, the regional unit of the A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) has said.
The college, whose foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is meant to start courses from this academic session.
The Education Department through a notification on May 30 had announced the commencement of admissions for undergraduate courses at the Rongjeng Model Degree College and Patharkhmah Model Degree College in Ri-Bhoi.
AHAM, however, is concerned about the college building’s structural integrity.
“In the event of a calamitous occurrence attributable to the inferior construction, upon whom does the onus of accountability rest?” the pressure group asked. It also questioned whether the institute has a principal, managing committee and faculty in place.
AHAM said the government should refrain from “unkept promises” as they leave an “acrid aftertaste” in the mouths of the public.
It called for a “rigorous and impartial investigation” prior to the start of classes at the college.
“It is imperative to ensure that the students are not imperiled by the hazards of a substandard edifice. This matter is of grave concern, for it pertains to the very safety and well-being of the students. We trust that the truth will be acknowledged and appropriate measures will be taken to safeguard the future of our scholars,” AHAM regional president Jaksrik N Sangma said.
