The daily traffic jam caused by movement of heavily loaded limestone trucks in Ichamati and Majai area under Sohra Civil Sub-Division has irked the Achik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM), Khasi Hills Zone which has urged the district authorities to take urgent steps to address the problem.
In a statement issued to the media, AHAM Khasi Hills Zone president Labiush Arengh said that since January till date the traffic jam on the road from Ichamati to Bholaganj, Majai always stretches for around eight kilometers from 8:30 am to 7:30 pm resulting in immense hardship to local residents especially students and the sick who need to be taken for medical treatment.
Stating that trucks laden with limestone are occupying the whole road without leaving any space for other commuters including pedestrians, the AHAM leader alleged that this is due to failure of the Police Department to streamline and regulate the movement of trucks along this road.
“We are not against the transportation of limestone but our concern is only for the benefit and convenience of all the local residents particularly the school goers, the sick people, etc,” Arengh said while urging the authorities especially the police to intervene and take necessary steps to ease the hardship of the people.
