The A’chik Holistic Awakening Movement (AHAM) has written to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma over unfinished work at Rongjeng College.
Rongjeng does not have much in the way of educational facilities as it has been ignored by the state government, AHAM claimed. However, the central government saw fit to allocate a college to the area but the contractor allocated the work has never been seen in the town, it added.
The non-availability of a local institute of higher learning means that many school graduates have to go elsewhere for their college education.
The Centre has allocated Rs 12 crore for construction of the main college building plus boys’ and girls’ hostels but the pressure group accused the state government of allocating the work to its favourite contractors.
AHAM alleged that the work done has been of substandard quality, with the main building showing cracks as it was built on loose, sandy soil. The boys’ and girls’ hostel buildings are also showing signs of cracks and no retaining wall has been constructed for either the main building or boys’ hostel.
In addition, AHAM highlighted the lack of an approach road to the college, no water supply, thin doors and poor quality bricks allegedly used in the construction.
